Chocolate Pound Cake Recipe

Pound cakes are good, and chocolate pound cake recipes are even better!

But first, and just for fun, I thought you might like to see a recipe for pound cake dating back to 1749. I haven't tried this but if anyone does, I'd love to hear about it! LOL

[1747] "To make a Pound Cake
Take a Pound of Butter, beat it in an earthen Pan, with your Hand one Way, till it is like a fine thick Cream; then have ready twelve Eggs, but hald the Whites, beat them well, and beat them up with the Butter, a Pound of Flour beat in it, and a Pound of Sugar, and a few Carraways; beat it all well together for an Hour with your Hand, or a great wooden Spoon. Butter a Pan, and put it in and bake it an Hour in a quick Oven. For Change, you may put in a Pound of Currants cleaned wash'd and pick'd."

The following chocolate pound cake recipes could be more to your liking.

Chocolate Pound Cake Recipe #1

Tip: I've said this many times throughout this web site, but your hand-made goodies are so much better when you use quality chocolate or cocoa.

2 1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
3/4 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup butter
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
4 eggs
1 pkg German chocolate, melted and cooled
1/2 cup coconut

-----glaze-----

3 oz semi sweet chocolate
1 tbsp butter

Mix flour with sugar, salt, cream of tartar, soda and cinnamon. Cream butter to soften. Add four mixture, milk and vanilla. Mix until all flour is moistened, then beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Add eggs and chocolate. Beat 1 minute more. Pour into prepared 10 inch tube pan. Bake 1 hour and 20 minutes at 325°F or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes. Remove and complete cooling on rack. Glaze.

Glaze: Melt semi sweet chocolate with butter, stirring constantly. Cool slightly and drizzle with tip of spoon over top of cake.

Double Chocolate Pound Cake Recipe

1/2 cup butter or margarine, room temperature
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
4 squares (4 oz.) unsweetened chocolate, melted
4 eggs
2 1/2 cup cake flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup chocolate chips coated in
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
fresh strawberries for garnish (optional)

Tip: Instead of using buttermilk in your chocolate pound cake recipe, you can use 1 cup of skim milk with 1 tsp vinegar to sour it

Preparation time: 20 min. Baking time: about 50 min.

Cream butter with sugars until smooth and well blended. Add chocolate and eggs, one at a time. Beat well until fluffy. Mix flour and baking soda. Add to creamed mixture. Blend in buttermilk and vanilla. Stir. Add chocolate chips coated with flour. Turn batter into a well-greased and floured 10 inch tube pan. Bake at 350 ° F for 50 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool in pan for a few minutes before turning out onto a wire rack. Cool completely. Garnish with berries and serve with whipping cream.
